When we opened our doors in 1996, the electronics industry looked very different from what it is today. Component sizes were shrinking, manufacturing equipment was becoming more automated, and product designs were becoming increasingly complex. Thirty years later, we’ve seen those changes continue, along with countless changes in the materials, equipment, and processes used to build electronic assemblies. Through all of that change, one thing has remained at the center of how we work: quality.

Our approach to PCB assembly services has always included looking for ways to do things better. That means reevaluating our processes, materials, and equipment as we learn more and as new options become available. Of course, we don’t change for the sake of change. It’s to find improvements that help us produce better, more consistent assemblies for our customers.

Quality Is Never Finished

One lesson we have learned over the past three decades is that quality requires constant attention. That’s why we regularly review how we do things and ask where we can improve. New manufacturing equipment may offer better capabilities. Inspection technology may give us another way to identify potential issues. Or a different material or process may provide an opportunity to improve a particular application. When we evaluate changes, we ask one important question: Will this help us deliver better quality to our customers?

Our focus on quality has contributed to a 98% first-pass yield, helping us identify problems early and maintain consistency from one build to the next. While the details of our improvements matter to us, our customers care that they receive assemblies that meet their expectations.

Supporting a Wide Range of Products and Industries

Over 30 years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with customers across a wide range of industries and applications. Our major customers include companies developing precision analysis equipment, motion control systems, and power monitoring and control systems. We’ve also supported smaller-scale and specialized electronic products, including Arduino controllers, temperature monitoring systems, and miniaturized connector modules.

The products may be very different, but each one brings its own requirements and challenges. Working across such a range of applications has given our team experience we can bring to new projects. It has also reinforced something we’ve seen throughout our history: no single approach works for every assembly. Understanding what each customer is trying to accomplish and paying attention to the details of their particular product are part of building quality into the finished assembly.

Why Customers Keep Coming Back

Quality is a big part of why customers keep working with us, but it isn’t the only reason. Our customers also value getting a response when they have a question, work through an unexpected problem, or need to make a change. Responsiveness is essential, particularly when a production schedule or product requirement changes, and there isn’t time to wait for an answer.

We also believe customer experience is about more than completing an assembly order. It’s about understanding what matters to the customer and being willing to work through challenges with them. Our customers trust us with products that are important to their businesses, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Many of our relationships today were built over years of working together. Those long-term relationships are something we value deeply. They tell us that customers see SMT Northwest as more than a company that builds their circuit boards. They see us as a partner committed to helping them succeed.

The Next 30 Years

As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we’re grateful to the customers, employees, and partners who have made this journey possible. We don’t know exactly what the next 30 years will bring. We expect new technologies, new products, and new ways of manufacturing electronic assemblies. We’ll continue evaluating those changes and deciding where they can make a meaningful difference for our customers.

We do know what we want to carry forward. We will continue to make superior quality the standard we measure ourselves against, continue looking for better ways to work, and continue building the relationships that have been an important part of SMT Northwest since 1996.
